Start school at age six ?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/7989380.stm

A mature part of the education staff seems to think that children should not start with school under the age of six. The reasons therefore are that children of the age of six and seven are emotionally ready, social able, physically content and mature enough to start learning. Children of the age of four are not ready for school because they can not handle the curriculum, these children first have to learn the thrill of learning before they actually can start learning the curriculum, but when it comes to ages there is a lot of parental pressure to start school as early as possible so they can go back to work. Therefore a spokeswomen for the Department of Children has said that the age of five would have positive benefits on attainment.

I think most of the education staff is right, there are many young children of the age of four that are not ready for school yet. On the other hand I think starting with school at they age of six or seven is too late, children can not stay at home or in pre-school for two more years. I have to say the spokeswomen of the children department has come up with a great age to start with school, they age of five. This gives the children on more year to become emotional and physically ready.

  1. "A mature part" > vocabulary

"should not start with school..." > should not start school (x2)

"emotionally ready, social able, physically content..." > go back to the article and use that to correct the grammar in this sentence.

"they actually can..." > word order

"staff is" > subject verb agreement (staff is plural)

"they age of five" > typo?

"become emotional and physically ready" > adjective-adverb.

A good clear summary and reaction, well done.

  2. Good article, and especially good for a debate. I agree with you saying that some children are not emotionally ready, but take a quick look at most of us. We all started at the age of four/five years old and in my eyes we have developed to respecting, emotionally functional adults? Or am I wrong?

  3. I think it is an interesting article and it sure is a good topic for a debate. I agree some children are not ready for school at the age of four but there are simpe solutions for children who are not ready yet. They can do first grade (? or how they call it in England) twice so that these children will never be send to the next level to early. The younger children are the easier they learn, I think that four or five is a reasonable age to start school.
